Avid brakes are good enough. But be careful when servicing them; I use a torque wrench to service my bikes. But my Avids on my HT needed some TLC. That done I tightened the clamps au - and torqued them to the right amount (4.5 - 5.5 Nm).
Problem I noticed was the bottom of the clamps had actually split but not completely. A spilt clamp that's a split clamp! Well, only thing you can do is replace them - thankfully I found a place on Amazon selling them at 8 pounds plus change each. Not cheap but your not going to risk riding down, dropping off or getting air with a set of brakes that could slip or worse - come off the bars completely.
Be warned; I'm v.careful to tighten the top & bottom bolts equally. Bottom line: They're made of some cheap funky metal mixture so go easy or go find a replacement like I had to!
Once on, as you'd expect they do what they should.
